What is Cavity Wall Insulation?

A cavity wall consists of two tiers of brick with a slight space, or ‘cavity’, between the two. Cavity Wall Insulation (CWI) fills that gap with some type of insulating material (foam, mineral wool or polystyrene beads) that helps to capture heat within your home.

At this stage, you don’t even have to worry about aluminum versus steel. We understand at Energy Wizards, and will dispatch a professional surveyor to your home. They’ll assess whether your home is fit for cavity wall insulation through a government-backed scheme and whether this needs to be removed in the first place, or any old, damaged insulation.

If your house was built between 1924 and 1982 and has unfilled cavity walls, you are likely to be eligible for free insulation to be installed.

How Cavity Wall Insulation Works?

Insulating your cavity walls will help to keep your home warmer by limiting the amount of heat lost through your walls. It can significantly reduce heat loss and increase energy efficiency by a because insulating the cavity.

Insulating materials, such as fibreglass, are typically blown into this cavity so air does not pass through it. Doing this helps hold the indoor temperature steady, lowering the demand to run your heating constantly.

Not only will you feel cosier at home, but you’ll consume less energy, lower your heating bills and shrink your carbon footprint — all while making your property greener.

Why Do Energy Companies Give Cavity Wall Insulation For Free?

Have you ever thought about why some energy companies are having free cavity wall insulation? All of this is thanks to the government-backed Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme — now in its fourth stage, ECO4. The scheme, which is being regulated by the Ofgem and is being supported by The Energy Saving Trust, will target homes and improve their energy efficiency across the UK.

Under this scheme, energy suppliers have a legal obligation to ensure that homes are made more energy-efficient. If they don’t, they face steep penalties — so it’s in their best interest to ease you into an upgrade of your house. That’s where trusted ECO4 installers such as UK Energy Support come into play, helping households to obtain free insulation, heating upgrades, and more.

Free cavity wall insulation is among the most common upgrades. It’s a revolutionary concept for homeowners and tenants alike. The installation is also fully funded (material and labour), a great way to reduce your energy bills and uplift your home EPC rating. Once the work is done, you get a new Energy Performance Certificate for your property.

The funds are particularly targeted at low-income and vulnerable households — helping tackle fuel poverty across the UK. At Energy Wizards we have partnerships with schemes like this to help even more people access grants.

All Set to Slash Your Energy Bills AND Make Your Home Toastier — FOR FREE? Cavity wall insulation is often a step that people take for free, potentially your first move towards a more energy-efficient future.

What is Cavity Wall Insulation Made from?

The cavity wall insulation is generally composed of mineral wool, glass fiber, or polystyrene beads. They hold the heat in very well and can minimise energy loss through your walls by 35% If your home has partially filled cavity walls, it’s still better than none at all.

Cavity wall insulation could reduce your energy bills by about £145 a year and cut your carbon emissions by up to 610kg. Under the government’s ECO scheme, energy companies are required to provide energy-saving free home improvements – including repairing broken gas boilers and cavity wall or solid wall insulation.

Energy Wizards also believes in smart integrated solutions to efficiently enhance and optimise your home. So, check now to see if you could get free cavity wall insulation — or even insulation removal — while support is available.

Benefits of Cavity Wall Insulation installed through Energy Company Obligation (ECO scheme):

Fully funded

Insulation measures can be fully paid from the government funding for cavity wall insulations pot and therefore save money.

Save money

An uninsulated home loses about a third of its heat through the walls. If you insulate cavity walls properly through an approved installer, you will save energy and cut your heating costs.

Warmer home

The free insulation will limit the lost heat generated by having empty cavity walls and allow you to retain heat for longer.

Home value increase

Not only will your energy bills decrease, but upgrades like adding insulation to solid walls or installing free cavity wall insulation and loft insulation can increase your property’s value.

No maintenance

A good pre-installation assessment and good installation procedures can easily prevent the majority of cavity wall problems.

Reduce foundation weight

As a result of their thinner thickness, cavity walls reduce the weight on the foundation.

Cavity wall insulation for free — is your home eligible?

Not all homes are right for cavity wall insulation, but there’s a couple of simple things that you can check, to see if your property is eligible.

For starters, your home should feature cavity walls that haven’t been previously filled. The cavity must be a minimum of 5cm wide, and your property must have been constructed prior to 1982. But homes built before 2005 may also qualify if insulation was not placed at the time of construction.

Your home should also be energy efficient over the long term, and in good shape generally. That means the brickwork or masonry itself must be good, with very little possibility of flooding or the impact of harsh weather (especially wind and driving rain). Even if neighbouring homes don’t have it, your home may still be eligible for cavity wall insulation.

It’s also important to mention that some properties may require existing insulation to be removed — particularly if it was installed poorly, has begun to degrade, or is causing damp or pest infestations. If the insulation wasn’t the correct product for your home to begin with, it should have never been installed in the first place.

If you’re unsure if your home is suitable, contact us at Energy Wizards. Just fill out a few quick questions, and we will DM you free advice and a brief assessment.

Discover whether you’re eligible for free cavity wall insulation today — your more energy-efficient house could be one step away.

Building regulations changed after 1982 where insulation was required to be fitted on any houses built from that point, but some of them weren’t. The properties built after 1982 that didn’t have cavity insulation fitted could be insulated for free with government funding if they were built before 2005.

Some homes can also need cavity wall insulation removal. In some cases, it may be necessary to extract the cavity wall insulation because the insulated cavity walls were done incorrectly and cause moisture.

You could be suffering from internal damp problems or vermin infestations. Perhaps the insulation was installed incorrectly or is deteriorating. If the insulation was not suitable for your home, then the installation should have been avoided altogether.

If you are still unsure, we could help you! Simply answer some questions, and we will give you a call for some advice and a brief assessment.

Can Your Location Decide Whether or Not You Can Get Cavity Wall Insulation Free?

Cavity wall insulation acts as a heat regulator that will help your house retain heat while saving on heating bills. But did you know that your location could determine whether you’re eligible for free insulation?

Areas which are heavily exposed to wind-driven rain, such as western England, Wales and Scotland, probably wouldn’t be best placed for cavity wall insulation as moisture can get trapped. However, there are other effective options available.

Other methods include other types of solid wall insulation, internal wall insulation, and loft insulation.

And at Energy Wizards, we partner with UK Energy Support to make sure you qualify for free insulation solutions, including loft, cavity wall, room-in-roof and sometimes internal wall insulation based on your property’s circumstances.

Is There Free Cavity Wall Insulation If You Are Not on Benefits?

Like those receiving benefits, if you don’t currently claim benefits, you may still qualify for free cavity wall insulation under the ECO4 and GBIS schemes. Housing association tenants wouldn’t usually qualify unless they owned at least 50 percent of their home, but you can still contact Energy Wizards to see what’s available.

However, if you don’t think you’re eligible, don’t be disheartened; your local council may provide assistance, or there could be alternative heating solutions we can assist with. Every situation is unique, and you might still be eligible for financing or other energy-saving options.

Contact Energy Wizards today to learn what’s on offer—we’ll keep you warm and help you save energy.
