Energy Company Obligation – Energy Wizards

All You Need to Know About Energy Company Obligation (ECO)

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) is a UK-government-backed scheme established to tackle fuel poverty and reduce carbon emissions throughout Great Britain. Under the scheme, large energy suppliers are mandated to assist households with energy efficiency improvements and heating upgrades.

ECO can offer all eligible residents non-repayable financial help — therefore your energy supplier could pay for your home insulation or heating system upgrade, at no charge to you.

Now entering its fourth and final phase — ECO4 — this is your opportunity to give your home an energy-efficiency boost before the scheme closes. So if you’re considering making your home warmer and greener, now is the time to take action.

Energy Wizards is here to help simplify the process. From confirming your eligibility through connecting you with the appropriate funding, we have a team ready to help you take advantage of ECO before it disappears entirely.

What is ECO funding?

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) is a government programme in the United Kingdom. The hope is to help lower energy bills, keep homes warmer and cut carbon emissions, by providing upgrades such as insulation or new heating systems. Since its debut in January 2013, more than 1.8 million homes have received more than 2.4 million energy-saving budget improvements. These homes have an average annual saving of £290.

Main Obligations

Energy suppliers need to support low income homes in making heating more efficient. That includes replacing outdated systems or insulating homes, making it easier for families to heat their homes affordably while still reaching environmental goals.

How Does the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) Scheme Work?

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme aims to make homes more energy efficient. Energy providers also via trusted installers such UK Energy Support will deliver improvements such as home insulation and migrating from electric room heaters to electric storage heaters.

What is the ECO3 grant?

Launched on 3 December 2018 and ending in April 2022, ECO3 was the third phase to be delivered as part of the UK’s Energy Company Obligation. It intended to help low-income and vulnerable households making upgrades and insulation measures to reduce fuel poverty while improving energy efficiency and lowering their heating bills.

What is ECO4 scheme?

The ECO4 scheme is the last phase of the UK Government Energy Company Obligation and runs until 2026. It aims to enhance efficiency upgrades to the energy performance (EPC rating) of homes. Recent updates modified eligibility rules to exclude some disability payments.

What is ECO5 scheme?

Launched in 2026 after the ECO4 Scheme, the ECO5 Scheme is a government scheme to reduce carbon emissions. It also encourages renewable energy upgrades and updates eligibility requirements to focus on high-emission homes. This will enable greater environmental impact and energy efficiency, which is aligned with the UK’s net-zero goals.

What is GBIS?

GBIS is a targeted extension of the UK’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) programme. This is not the case with ECO3 and ECO4, which catered for broader energy efficiency measures; GBIS specifically addresses the improvement of home insulation. It was designed to complement the existing ECO schemes by making insulation uplift upgrades more accessible. Focusing on insulation, GBIS reduces energy bills and carbon footprints. This effort represents a step in the government’s changing approach to improving energy efficiency in homes.

Do I Qualify for ECO?

From March 2022 onwards, OFGEM’s ECO scheme became ECO4, which in April began placing greater emphasis at upgrading the UK’s least energy performing homes. This phase focuses on upgrading heating systems and requiring homes to meet new government energy standards. The scheme is still focused on low-income, fuel-poor and vulnerable households. But not all prior qualifying benefits remain accepted. If you don’t know whether you qualify, it’s worth looking again under the new rules. That’s how we support you at Energy Wizards to navigate through the changes and channels, and provide you with the support you need to make your home warmer, greener and energy-efficient. Let’s find out if you’re eligible today.

How much funding can I get?

ECO4 grant (or Home Heating Cost Reduction Obligation) — will compel energy suppliers to pay for efficiency upgrades. How much you get also depends on your home’s EPC score — those rated D or lower generally qualify for the most help.

If you’re receiving qualifying benefits, your energy supplier may pay 100% of the costs for:

  • Insulation
  • Heating upgrades
  • Other energy-saving measures

The poorer your EPC rating, the greater your likelihood of success.

This means that those who would otherwise be excluded under standard rules can still get their due.

How does LA Flex work?

LA Flex is a program that assists individuals based on age, low income, or health needs, regardless of whether they receive benefits. To see if you qualify, go to your local council’s site for more information. Powered by Energy Wizards.
