The UK Government has begun to roll out a range of support schemes to help households cope with rising energy costs; as bills soar. Some of the key initiatives include the Energy Bills Support Scheme, the Energy Price Guarantee, the ECO4 Scheme and Cost of Living Payments. These programmes are intended to help improve energy efficiency, alleviate financial burden, and assist with finding a suitable energy provider. From the Winter Fuel Payment to switching suppliers, here’s how to consider your options.
The good news: Alongside this, grant applications for the ECO4 Scheme are open from April 2025 — just in time to make your home more energy-efficient.
Homeowners Come : The focus of the ECO4 Scheme is on homeowners. Tenants are still able to apply — but only with their landlord’s consent. Landlords should also get involved.
Stable or Low Income Or Benefits: Low-income households, or those receiving certain benefits, are usually eligible. Not on benefits? Don’t fret — other sources of funding could still be available.
Property Condition: The scheme prioritises help for homes with a low EPC rating (D or below) or homes facing fuel poverty.

As energy prices soar, the UK government’s support plan helps find its way, providing financial assistance and reducing energy bill prices. This crucial relief helps to lift the pressure on families, so they can handle the surge in gas and electricity costs.
Soaring energy prices are creating pressure on many households, causing it challenging to monitor power expenses. That’s where government assistance comes in — essential help is offered through schemes such as the Warm Home Discount, Winter Fuel Payments and Cold Weather Payments, particularly in the colder months. These efforts help keep vulnerable homes warm and powered.
The Government Energy Bills Support scheme helps by providing you with support such as grants, Pension Credit and energy price caps to help ease the burden of increasing energy prices to number of people. Support includes the Household Support Fund for additional assistance, delivered via local councils and suppliers. Other schemes, such as ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme, also offer funding for home upgrades that reduce bills. It helps families across the UK keep their energy costs down.
Eligible households can receive a one-time discount on their electricity bill each winter to help lower heating costs.
Automatically provided to eligible pensioners to help cover heating costs during colder months.
During periods of significantly cold weather, eligible individuals with specific means-tested benefits get extra payments to handle higher heating costs.
Warm Home Discount — a one-off winter discount on your electricity bill if you qualify.
Winter Fuel Payment: Automated assistance to bereaved pensioners to provide for heating in the cold months.
Cold Weather Payment: Additional assistance for individuals receiving specific benefits in order to cover heating expenses during frigid weather.

Households also got a £400 discount on energy bills between October 2022 and March 2023 through the government’s Energy Bills Support Scheme. Replacement vouchers were introduced until June 30th, 2023 — relieving pressure of increasing energy prices when people needed it most.

In 2023, the Energy Price Cap, administered by British energy regulator Ofgem, imposed a limit on the price of energy suppliers could charge, capping the average household’s annual costs at £1,928 between January and March 2024.
In July 2023, this Energy Price Guarantee discount ended for the vast majority of households, apart from those using pre-payment meters. These customers then remained subject to a small discount — about £25 over a nine-month period — and paid a similar amount in that period as direct debit users. However, they provided official end of support on 31 March 2024.
By April 2024, the ‘PPM premium’ was abolished and pre-payment customers now pay the same costs as everyone else — a change that moves us towards fairer pricing for all energy consumers.
As of April 2024, the Energy Price Cap holds average household energy bills steady. If families need additional support, Energy Wizards stresses that options such as payment holidays and debt repayment plans are options. These government-backed solutions guarantee that financial assistance is available when it is needed most.
Energy Wizards advocates for just energy prices every day of the year. Energy Price Cap changes only with the market, not the weather. It protects consumers, in particular vulnerable groups including pensioners or priority services users, who may benefit from additional support in the colder months, such as financial assistance or fuel payments. Cost of Living Payments – The UK government has announced Cost of Living Payments for low-income households, pensioners and people with disabilities who are struggling with rising energy costs in 2023/24. These payments — £301, £150, and £300 — are available to recipients of specific means-tested benefits, including people who use a prepayment meter. It’s part of a broader push to assist vulnerable groups with skyrocketing gas and electricity bills.
